Good luck selling to the rest of the world, and enjoy the insularity of that. Protectionism is the worst economic strategy there is, and although you may see a short term gain, long term, it is a disaster.
But, America, fill yer boots. China and Germany are right there ready to take over as the economic leaders and giants. Oh, and BTW, USA, pay up the money you owe. Now.
If you think the USA is still in the drivers seat economically, not a chance. It is a predominate player, but if it does the Trump import tariff things, just see how fast your products won't be selling. Boeing? Nope, Airbus builds them just as well. Caterpillar? Nope, Komatsu is just as good and cheaper. GE products? Nope, name a category, and there is a major player out there just as good. Pratt and Witney jets? Nope, Rolls Royce work just fine. Dupont? Nope, Bayers does better.
So, sure, pile on those tariffs. But don't expect that there won't be instant and tough retribution.
VW sells the most cars in the world and only 6% of them here in the States. Look at Tata, also huge 600,000 employee Indian car company.
The larger automakers sell many cars worldwide. Some will be effected more than others. GM and Ford sell a ton of cars in China, a trade war will really hurt their profits.
Trump personally owns foreign cars ( Mercedes, Lamborghini, rolls Royce,.) His helicopter is American made..sikorsky global. . Seems he is speaking out of a different orifice for this tarrif.
Thank you to the poster who linked the true executive order counts.
Hope these cars can get pass this glorious wall!
Just remember , other countries can high tariff us too. Never assume we have the upper hand..
Moving manufacturing here is not going to help all that much anyway. Have you ever been to an automotive manufacturing plant? It is spookily empty. Everything is automated.
Mexico obviously doesn't think so because they are fighting tooth and nail to keep them there.
The current administration has made an art of executive actions so there is precedent to take action from the WH. 35% may be a talking point while 10% may be a target. Companies with US plants like BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, etc. may get a break, but Audi does no manufacturing in the US and send a lot of cars from India.
Just speculation at this point.
What kind of bashing are you trying to slip in there?? Because you are completely wrong.

Whatever EO the president issues is going to be the law until it's challenged in court. If Trump tries a 35% tax he'll probably get it...for a while.
Herbert Walker Bush was a one term President. If you double his number of orders to HONESTLY COMPARE IT to all the other two term presidents, he would have made 27% more, ( 166 (in his first and only term) x 2 =332 compared to Obamas 260).
Obama had FEWER.. by 12% (G.W. Bush 291, Obama 260), then the second Bush, and Obama had a congress and a senate that declared that they would just do everything they could to not work with him.
EDITED: If you wanted to break it down to per term. President Obama has issued fewer executive orders for either of his 4 year terms than any other president in the last 120 years.

Some things we can start making here again, some we cannot. It is impractical to operate hot steel forges here due to regulations.

They recently reconfigured a plant near us. The doubled its physical size and substantially increased its output. However at the same time, they re-tooled the old part of the plant; added autmoation. The net impact was a reduction of 300 jobs.

By this logic, Caterpillar,Dupont, GE, Boeing should all be out of business.
I was considering buying a AUDI Q5 this summer. I want the newer model which will launch in US this spring. Audi just finished its plant in Mexico and the newer Q5 will be built there.
The EU already has a 10% tariff on cars imported from the US. Our import duty on EU cars is 2.5%. At the very least, there is nothing wrong with leveling the playing field. For decades we have let other countries dump their products in the US, while they in turn add high protective tariffs or play games certifying US made cars for their markets. IF we go to some sort of free-trade agreement, we need to extend that-to the same safety and emissions standards as other countries have. Thing is though-vehicles made in Europe have no inherent cost advantages over US ones. Our manufacturing emissions standards, pay scales, benefits and safety rules aren't that different. And those countries often have even higher taxes than we do.
Raising the tariffs, or making them built in the US, will just put car prices out of the reach of buyers no matter where they are built, US or otherwise.
With all Trump's talk of wanting to punish companies that export products to the U.S., when is he going to bring back the manufacturing of the 800+ products he makes overseas? Will the MSM ever grow a pair and ask him this question? Ivanka Trump just built a new factory, not in the U.S., but in Ethiopia. She moved her manufacturing there just recently. Will these same tariffs apply to their products? GOP's Golden Rule is IOKIYAR, but with Trump, it appears to be IOKIYAT.
