financial problems for Circle C? I can't imagine why turning those over to the public was considered a good idea.

Interesting. I know it's a nice golf course (it's been 15 years since I've played it). FWIW, they also have a very good Junior Tennis program there. I wonder if there will be changes. (or will they keep the programs & staff in place?)

Lord knows the expensive (not only expensive, but also very cr*ppy) "build it & they will come" tennis facility out in NE Austin (almost to Manor) that the city built 3-4 years been a huge bust & money drain.

Good. CoA does a pretty decent job maintaining and running their municipal golf facilities. Grey Rock has gone downhill pretty dramatically, having an institution with an active support network of leagues and members will only help that course.

Does this provide them additional ammo for redeveloping the Muni course (just dive south a "little" bit)?

Pretty sure that's a big factor. Lions is sitting on some extremely valuable land - land that the city doesn't own. At some point, UT is going to sell that property, this move would give the city control over all its courses.

Lions also, despite its history, just cannot adapt to the modern game - there isn't enough space to bring the facilities and course up to par (been waiting to use that pun!). You can't host real tournaments or events there - and that's where the real revenue streams are in the muni golf world.

The City's lease on Muny expires in 2019, and UT has already given notice. This is just planning for the inevitable.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe Circle C has any affiliation with Grey Rock besides being close to the course.

Fair point in water hungry times. But part of it is to keep that land, which is in the recharge zone, from being developed into SF homes.

Why does a city provide any recreation? Or parks? Or a library? Or swimming pools?

The city has been providing golf opportunities for the better part of seventy years. This isn't anything new.
