The Woolworth Building

The Woolworth Building is located in downtown Oxnard, next to the 14-screen muti-plex theaer and restaurant, less than two miles from the 101 freeway. The building was built in 1950 and is one of the most recognizable destinations in Oxnard. It underwent renovations in 2003 and was converted into retail, commercial and restaurant space. Many of the buildings features survived the restoration and were simply cleaned and updated, like the red ribbon sign on the front of the building. The plumbing and HVAC systems were both updated and an alarm system was installed. Architectural features of the building include narrow and wide piers that divide the window bays, incised angular motifs in the stone panels above the windows and original steel-framed windows. Each of these features illustrates the art deco style in which it was designed and built. The lobby area is home to the Woolworth Museum, featuring hundreds of photographs and items from across the country. There are old-time working vending machines, a photo booth and historical items from the history of the five and dime. Visitors can grab some food after a tour of the building and museum at the Experimental Café, serving breakfast and lunch in a 1960's atmosphere.
