Is that lake near you frozen over? Does it ever? I wish the climo airport site in Seattle measured snowfall.

Here's from CoCoRaHS. Only 0.1" from Mercer Island. 5.7" in Hoodsport near Olympic Forest. 32.5" in Leavenworth, wonder if thats a Ski resort?

No, Lake Sammmish is 7.6 square miles and has not frozen over since 1950. We do also have Beaver Lake and Pine Lakes near us, neither froze this last storm but have in the past, though it's rare. It requires 2-3 weeks of 10-15F for that to happen. This time it was only the small local ponds that froze. The airport is in Seatac, about 14 miles south of downtown Seattle, but for some reason they use it for Seattle weather reports. This morning it was 44F when I left for work at 5am. Leavenworth is a winter recreation area, with a small ski area, but mostly attracts people for the winter scenic beauty of the Bavarian themed town.

National Weather Service for Juneau, AK has posted on their Facebook website that the total so far for January alone is 55 inches to date.
That would be at the airport station. Downtown has had even more, probably close to 6 feet for the month.

Dec: 15.5cm (6")
Jan: 49cm (19")

Total to date: 76.5cm (30")

More or less caught up to normal to date now, but we'll fall behind again with all the mild weather. Although who knows, we might get a bit more on the weekend.

WOW! Thank you! Not sure why Juneau didn't come up on the 20th for the update.

They are now in 1st place thanks to the 34.5 inches past 3 days! Over 3 feet above normal to date!

7.3" is what we have accumulated as of Oct 30, 2023 to now Jan 24, 2024. Pretty pathetic, and October remains our snowiest month. Nearly 37% of our seasonal snow accumulation happened in a single snowfall that began late Oct 30th and ended early morning of Halloween.

Lets look at NYC's snowfall since the 1930s by the decade..

The 1950s & 1980s were the least snowiest with almost every winter below normal

The 2010s was the snowiest decade

2020s so far....well....... never had 2 winters ending in single digit snowfall total within a decade let alone 3.

I posed a question on a Valdez, Alaska social media group to see if anyone had a handle on their snowfall total this season.
This was an interesting response:

"Hi, I´m actually in Valdez just to spend one winter in the snowiest city in the US before I move to somewhere (else in Alaska). And this is going to make me appear like an idiot when I say this, but I have actually measured the snowfall on a flat surface 2-3 times a day every day it snowed since I´ve been here on October 5th. The only thing to consider is if the first inch that fell melted because the ground was too warm (which I don´t imagine much did), then that was not counted.
October: 1 inch
November: 22 inches
December: 80 inches
January: (up until noontime today): 24 inches
It would seem like it is less than it was according to the average snowfall in Valdez, but again, maybe lots of snow melted in between my "shifts" lol"

That's some diligent record keeping. Until an official tally can be found online, and I've searched many times in the past, I'm going with his figure of 127 inches to date. Clearly, January has been far below average so far.

But it looks like a bit of catch up is coming soon.
