I got contacted two days ago by a recruiter at Amazon about an application I put in. I was curious if anyone could give me a rundown of how the Interview Process works? She asked for good dates to interview, but I haven't received a response from her after sending it.

Anyone have any good insights into Amazon? I hear it's intensely stressful. I'm not a SDE (I'm in IT Security) so no programming worries here. I'm originally from the Seattle area, and would love to move back.

Edit - I wanted to add that I'm totally excited about the interview and the chance to work at a fast-paced company. One of the major problems in the position I'm in now, is that even though it's a Senior-level position it's insanely boring. There is no challenge or thought process involved in the day to day job. I think the previous paragraph might have seemed that I was apprehensive about Amazon, which I'm not.

Well, "fast paced" is definitely one way to describe life at Amazon.

Another might be "they take ownership of your soul and work it until it collapses in a sobbing heap of itself".

Thanks. I read through a lot of those posts already. There's some pretty good information in them.

It's going to sound like a stupid question, but one of the questions gnawing in the back of my mind is, what would I even wear to a tech interview? I've spent the last 10+ years in the Defense industry/Government/Military sector, and a suit is common place. The Amazon site specifically states that a suit is not impressive.

Just curious if a suit would be a turn off at all? I just don't want to walk in with my plaid shorts, a geek t-shirt, and crocs and say "Hey, I'm the dude here for the interview".

It's not a stupid question. You will probably get a note from your recruiter shortly before the interview telling you not to wear a suit.

My husband wore dress pants, a buttoned down shirt and a tie. He felt extremely overdressed (but he got the job). Now that he works there, he pretty much wears shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops to work every day.

I'd say no suit, but dress pants and a nice shirt for sure.

V. =)

My husband wore business slacks, a button down, and a relaxed sport coat...which he promptly took off the minute he walked in the door. He also got the job. He tends to dress in nicer jeans, button downs and cool shoes on a day to day basis though some days he will do Keens, jeans and a fleece. It is a really casual work environment.
