No one has mentioned government subsidies.

China Heavily Subsidized BYD to Expand Its EV Market Share
Quote:
The Chinese government has granted direct subsidies of at least $3.7 billion (3.4 billion euros) to EV manufacturer BYD, which has been one of the main beneficiaries of China’s massive subsidies for green technologies
It’s a political tool. Provide subsidies so the carmaker can undercut the competition, drive it out of the market and then take control of the sector.

And so did our government..subsidize the Big Three...to the tune of $15.5 billion.."Investing in America" which really should be "Subsidizing our friends"

Are we no different? Well the Big Three didn't make any money off the EV's...with their labor cost they lost thousands per EV sold. Go America !

I remember 5-6 years ago, when Trump put tariffs on Chinese aluminum, steel and other products, all our "left leaning" posters were on here denouncing him, saying it was driving up prices on materials for US manufacturers, raising prices for our consumers. Now that Biden is doing exactly the same thing-will those posters have the integrity to denounce him as well?

The high tariffs won't help US automakers. Their EV's are too pricey.

And even with government subsidies ($15.5 billion) Ford lost $1.3 billion 1Q24...$36K loss on each EV sold.

Too little, too late was my thought when I heard this. Groceries continue to edge up every single week! Illegals/fake asylum seekers continue to suck down the taxpayers hard earned dollars, while citizens sleep on the street, and more joining them all the time due to the cost of housing and the shortage of housing.

This one does. I don't know about "denouncing" Biden, but the tariffs were a bad idea when Trump did it and they are a bad idea now. Not only these new tariffs, but I have been "denouncing" Biden's failure to roll back the Trump era tariffs from the day he took office.

Because the people that want them (EV) can't afford what the Detroit two offer, and the people that can afford them , don't want them.

And the cheap EV's just aren't profitable like a high content $60k plus one is. Meanwhile, abroad there are many low cost EV's available, so the US manufactures can't count on the overseas markets to help them.

It is a tough dilema for the legacy OEM's
