You keep thinking that.

Poor fit/finish, buzzy low powered engines, odd transmission gear timing, voice prompts in Mandarin, Dlackofconfigurability in electronic cabin controls, poor dash instrument viewing due to bad design and sunlight, etc.......

My last Chinese car rental was in 2022 in Doha, Qatar. Never again, much less buy one to own.
You sound like a bitter woman after breaking up with her man with whom she had multiple episodes of actions together but then turned sour and started bad mouthing the man who gave her what she was looking for …chinese products in general are made to meet the needs of mostly people in need or wanting to make the best bang for their buck. You won’t ever hear people of Zuckberg class complaining how bad/cheap Chinese products are. People with options will likely not betting their luck on a Chinese car after 1-2 bad experiences… but you stick to it 5 times…doesn’t sound too smart

So Calamity Joe wants everyone driving around in Ol' Sparky, but he doesn't want to let a nation that can make and sell them at a reasonable price to be able to do so in the USA.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Actually, it sounds like someone who gave Chinese vehicles a fair chance over a period of years and through experience determined they are crap.

You would prefer an uninformed off-the-cuff opinion like you give in most of your posts?

A problem at this point is that we are essentially reacting to China's economic advances, rather than vice versa. China can continue to sell their cars across much of the world, which will be hard on our car export business.

I have zero issues with tariffs in place to make an even playing field. We just can't compete with slave labor and don't want to drop our standard of living to that of China working class.

It seems though it isn't that simple, and China always seems to come out ahead on these types of things.

Not to mention, our Detroit two don't exactly offer an EV in that price range, so, will having these cheap EV's really hurt them ?

I personally don't want the cheap China garbage EV's here, but I am not really their target market.

Which is what is happening.
Chinese EV's are a threat, not "cheap crap".

BYD's latest vehicle "Seagull" is not "cheap crap from China"

https://apnews.com/article/china-byd...234d93ec1df400

A tiny, low-priced electric car called the Seagull has American automakers and politicians trembling.

The car, launched last year by Chinese automaker BYD, sells for around $12,000 in China, but drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. A shorter-range version costs under $10,000.

Tariffs on imported Chinese vehicles probably will keep the Seagull away from America’s shores for now, and it likely would sell for more than 12 grand if imported.
..
BYD, which stands for “Build Your Dreams,” could be a nightmare for the U.S. auto industry.

Anyone that approves of allowing $12,000 Chinese cars to be sold here, is also okay with Chinese workers making $1.93/hr on the low end to $4.27 on the high end...slave labor rates.

https://www.reuters.com/business/aut...ns-2023-09-05/

Our UAW workers make $21.49/hr on average, but some of those jobs will vanish if $12,000 Chinese EV's are sold here.

Aside from China's lower cost of labor, they also have a lot of Rare Earth Minerals (REM's) needed to make today's EV's, whereas the U.S. mines almost none (we have tons of them though), and refines even less (but we could).

U.S. auto makers buy most of their batteries from China, or Chinese companies operating in the U.S.. Michigan has a massive CCP battery plant under construction to make EV batteries for the American market.

So why is Joe doing this now? Votes & kickbacks are what motivates Joe Biden, so there's your answer. It's probably another quid pro quo shakedown. Soon, the CCP will cave in & payoff Joe, then Joe will soften his tarriff to limit only Chinese EV's that sell for <$12,000/ea. or >$250,000/ea.. In other words, no more tarriffs on Chinese EV's.
