If you were going to spend one year living in Mexico; where would you choose and why?

Also - yes please cover any thoughts on safety.

Thank you!

Going to need to share a lot more details than that. Your age, your budget, if you speak Spanish, weather likes/tolerance, and plenty more to start with.

To get it started though there is a huge divide between people who want to have a place that feels a lot like home with plenty of expats and those who want to feel like no doubt they are in Mexico. Language skills play a key role in this.

Cozumel. I got the Spanish covered via my rudimentary knowledge and my wife being a native speaker (she’s not Mexican, doe). Beautiful waters. Don’t know that the cartels care much. I’ll go diving and sell trinkets to those jerk tourists LMAO

If I was going to spend a year in Mexico, I'd be touring around seeing all the sights visiting all the interesting places. I'd be doing a lot of reading about the place and also checking the safety of the areas, if I had doubts about any area I'd be using the services of a tour company.

Guanajato

Guanajato is very international, but not an American conclave. Lots of cultural events, a charming city, and you can spend money, but there are more inexpensive options compared to Puerto Vallarta.

The local airport (BJX) has 11 nonstops to the US without the need of transferring at MEX

American Eagle Dallas/Fort Worth
United Express Houston–Intercontinental
.
Aeroméxico Connect Detroit, Los Angeles
VivaAerobus Seasonal: Chicago–O'Hare
Volaris Chicago–Midway, Fresno,Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose (CA), Los Angeles, Tijuana
(begins April 2-3 , 2020) Chicago–O'Hare , Dallas/Fort Worth , Las Vegas

Air Miles from BJX

Tijuana is not a US airport, but you can take a pedestrian bridge right into Southern California

Guadalajara

Best weather in Mexico IMO
Big city with a medium city feel
Friendly folks who will talk your ear off, very easy to make friends if you speak Spanish
Excellent gastronomía with regional specialties like carne en su jugo, birria, torta ahogadas
Extensive bus system, light rail one line open and second coming soon, plenty of Uber
Most areas where you'd want to live are fairly safe
Lots of younger working expats if you want to hang out with English speakers
Good entertainment districts

I would prefer a place with a colonial feel, but not touristy.

Maybe Cuernavaca because it has that along with perfect weather, or Guanajuato.

Oaxaca would be neat because of the culture and food, but it might be tough for a gringo to "fit in" down there.

Puebla is interesting, but probably too big for my liking.

That's hard to pull off both, places that have a colonial feel have usually been restored with tourists in mind.

You could consider Morelia, it's touristy but mainly domestic tourists it's not nearly as much on the gringo radar. That said, while the central part of the city is fine it's in an area that can be pretty dodgy.

Some where in the south. Northern Mexico doesn't interest me much. There are many archaeological sites and museums i want to see. it would probably take a long time to explore them properly.

I'd split my time between Central Mexico and Southern Mexico, basing myself in CDMX and Playa del Carmen.
