Read the scumbag’s manifesto because the mainstream media is going out of its way to censor it.

To the Black folks of Buffalo/Western NY and nationwide, please stay vigilant and arm yourself at all times because don’t expect these politicians including the useless Congressional Black Caucus to do anything about it except offer us their “support and prayers” and other symbolic nonsense.

Yes, the US is off the charts when it comes to frequency of mass shootings and resulting deaths. There was even a good guy with a gun there. Sadly his body armor protected the killer and he was able to shoot and kill the armed guard.

Lots of other countries have violent extremists, but they don't have such easy access to guns. Making a bomb is a lot harder, knife attacks can't inflict the same level of killing, using cars as weapons can only be effective in crowded outdoor areas.

Unfortunately, gun culture/rationalization is so deeply embedded with a segment of our population that nothing will change in the near term.

Good point as Buffalo does have the biggest black/African American population in Upstate NY and is only second behind NYC in black population in the state(5th biggest in the Northeast).

I'm also thinking that he took I-86 west to Route 219 or I-390 to Route 20 A to Buffalo, as that route is toll free and doesn't have the cameras that the Thruway has. In turn, you bypass Rochester and Syracuse taking that route.
People out to perpetrate a slaughter probably don't care about saving money on tolls.

10 people were taken into custody in that Milwaukee story (which I hadn't heard about until I read the article 10 minutes ago). Much different situation, probably gang-related. People, not person, in that case.

God doesn't exist, but thanks. I appreciate the sentiment. Bad luck that a mentally ill white supremacist from a far-flung area of upstate NY happened to pick Buffalo as his target. I'm not about to read his 180-page manifesto, even though I basically spend my entire life reading books and playing poker, but I'd be curious to find out why he bypassed closer 'black populations' (for lack of a more diplomatic phrasing) to victimize Buffalo's. I just took a cab home from Buffalo Creek casino (located in downtown Buffalo), and I was driven home by a gregarious African-American man who had some connection (in a 3 degrees if not 6 degrees of separation-sense) to 4 of the victims of this shooting. He mentioned some details. I was not as good of an audience as I should've been, but I got the gist. An absolute tragedy for the city/area.

The nine, innocent, and mostly older black people killed while having Bible study at their church in Charleston S.C., had absolutely nothing to do with the criminal element of the Black community that Dylan Roof professed his anger towards.

Similarly, these poor people, mostly Black Americans but several Whites, just shopping for groceries on a Saturday afternoon in Buffalo had no tie whatsoever to those perpetuating our illegal immigration issues.

Both cowardly chose easy targets that they knew would not be in a position to fight back.

Obviously, violence is not acceptable in either case. But, as with Roof, all this nut did was add fodder to the "White Supremicist Terrorist" rhetoric and narrative.

Total, evil, stupid loser. I feel horrible for the victims, for our country that we cannot just go grocery shopping without facing a horror such as this, and as a parent, I feel for his Mom and Dad and family that have to now deal with what their son has done.
Dylann Roof was southern, and so he likely had *some* radicalization built into him from the start, or near-start. I've read about him in the past, and that he showed no inclination to do what he did until it happened, but I think lots of things like this are matters of probabilities, probabilities which are never on display until, you know, they become probability 100 or 0--actual actions. This kid, Payton Gendron being his name, was a mentally ill community college dropout who wanted to shoot up his HS graduation a year or two ago, but then he became 'radicalized online' (as the saying now goes) within the past year, to the cause of white supremacy. There are many, many more people like this in the pipeline, and that is the scary thing. He had a video stream of the shootings on Twitch, a video stream service used mostly by gamers and owned by Amazon...the stream was removed after around 2 minutes, but multiple people sent the footage to me on Facebook (as if I'd ever want to view it).

Today I went to Barnes & Noble and started reading a book called 'Hateland: A Long Look at America's Extremist Heart', written by a former DHS lifer. The beginning of the book was disturbingly good in that the author said: the line between a normal human being and an extremist is a lot finer than you think, basically. He talked about risk factors and potential redeeming factors for any given human, most of them being situational/circumstantial and thus not in one's control. I read 10 pages or so, then decided I'd had enough and went to go read Charles Bukowski for the following 3 hours. Anyway, the point is that in a country where 74 million people are capable of voting for Donald Trump, you can never be surprised when incidents like this happen. The discourse has changed permanently in this country, for the worse. Now we're left to deal with the repercussions. It'll get worse before it gets better, in my estimation.

Oh I see.

- Southerners, if White, are most likely automatically reared with White supremacist idealogy

- Like everything else wrong in the world, "it's Donald Trump's fault"

Got it.

True, but I was thinking more in terms of being tracked via toll cameras more so than caring about the toll itself.

He's not alone, I remember not too long ago when that video came out with the police who "arrested" a little kid who took ice cream or candy or something like that in Syracuse, a lot of people here downstate, with their own incorrect biases and stereotypes about upstate cities were like, "there's black people in Syracuse (outside of the university)"? And some of the people I know who said that were black.
If anything, the demographics of the university lowers the black percentage in Syracuse. You take the university(and other colleges) out of Syracuse and the city approaches probably 40%, if not surpasses it.

Also, in terms of the food desert comment, there are a couple of stores in Syracuse that come to mind that could have been on the radar. So, knowing that, it is even more surprising at least to me.

If he had on his body armor it might have looked a bit suspicious driving through a toll booth. If he wasn't wearing it, taking the back roads would allow him to stop at some inconspicuous place and put it on.
