People eat and drink together sometimes to slow the effect of alcohol on the body. Often fatty foods are used. It works

But because the liver has to process both the meat and alcohol it causes a build up of toxins in the body. The liver sees the alcohol as the most toxic so puts the meat on hold while it breaks down the chemicals in alcohol.

It puts a stress on the liver and allows the accumulation of toxins by slowing gastric elimination.

Doctors should be explaining this to their patients. However, the patients probably wouldn't like it and would switch doctors. They're too attached to the way they like to eat. Then they often wonder why they get horrible life-threatening diseases. There are men who are actually proud of their huge "beer belly" and wear it like a badge of honor. Even if they knew it would cause them to suffer and/or die younger, they wouldn't care.

Disgustedman seemed to be saying just the opposite, which is what prompted my question - he seemed to say that he had to eat meat when he drinks and I was curious to know what his thinking was.

I had no idea there is a recommendation for the consumption of alcohol.

For us "non-drinkers," what can we do to catch up?

I see recommendations like 'two drinks per day' with nothing related to the weight of the drinker. Is there any reason applying the same standard to a 100lb woman and a 275lb linebacker makes sense?

I usually see the recommendations for women being about half that for men, but have a similar question; why is a 170-lb woman limited to half the recommended drinks of a 170-lb man? Heck, why is a 120-lb woman limited to half that? Based on weight, she could have 1.4 drinks per day.

I get colon polyps and get colonoscopies every three years due to that, and my GI doctor told me I should not be drinking more than 1 or 2 drinks a week. My general practitioner told me the same thing. I'm turning 60 in a month, and all my blood work comes back normal, so if I die at 80 due to colon cancer I'm OK with that. If I want to have a few drinks Friday and Saturday, I'm going to. If I want to get smashed occasionally at my lake house when no one else is in danger, I'm going to do that as well.

At my last physical, I told my doctor that I wouldn't be following her guidelines, and she said, "At least you're being honest with yourself and me." I don't want to live forever. In fact, after I get to an age when I can no longer be active, I'd be ready to go at God's earliest convenience.

Here are a few reasons why alcohol affects and interacts with women differently, steiconi.

Do you drink more than what is recommended in regard to weekly alcohol consumption?
No. I average less than one beer a week.
I believe the basis for the majority of metabolic disease - obesity, diabetes, liver, etc. - lies in our consumption of manufactured oils and alcohol. So I drink damn little.
