Any thoughts on maybe a large grocery coming to the Baxter area as it seem to be growing? Does anyone do much shopping at the Spring Street Market?

The Food Lion on Jackson in Cookeville is probably closer to Baxter than Spring Street Supermarket. Take Buffalo Valley Road from Baxter into Cookeville, turn right on Jackson and Food Lion will be on the left after a half mile or so.

I was actually going to comment on Baxter. I don't have population figures for the western third of Putnam County, but Upperman High School in Baxter has close to 900 students now, almost double what it was just a few years ago which indicates there's a lot of growth in that part of the county. I could see a small Walmart Supercenter in Baxter in the not-too-distant future, say like the size of the ones in Carthage and Jamestown. It would draw customers not just from western Putnam County but also from much of Jackson County.

There is the within the city limits of Baxter and there are the areas outside the city limits but still have a Baxter mailing address.

I have seen some nice new homes going up in Baxter that are not within the city limits.

I believe the big new industrial development area where the Academy sports distribution center is used to be part of the Baxter area and areas near the site still are. I could see more commercial growth surrounding that area where a grocery store could do well.

Agreed. Even though the Academy Sports center has a Cookeville address it's much closer to Baxter and should bring a lot of new housing developments in that part of the county. Look for more industrial development, too. The Baxter I-40 exit (286) will probably see a lot more development. The old race track alone is prime real estate ready for development in addition to the land along Hwy 56 just north of the interstate.

Right. Any idea what else is going there? It looks like they're clearing a lot of land and pouring a lot more foundations than for just the DG.

Here's the rendering for the new TownePlace Suites by Marriott being built across from Sam's Club. I think it looks pretty good.

UCBJ has a story on the hotel on their website, but it is behind their paywall.

That new but empty little strip mall on Interstate Drive between U-Haul and the John Deere dealership looks like there's something going in there. Finally. Does anyone know what's going on?
