DH will move next week into his corporate housing. I will stay in VA while school is still in session and try to explore the surrounding Charlotte area. I'll probably plan our househunting trip for april, until then I have (plenty of) time to gather all my info for the trip. We'll be moving end of June.
We're a family of 5 (kids are 7,3,1), we are looking for a family friendly community in or around Fort Mill with amenities like clubhouse, pool, playground, tennis/basketball courts and ofcourse shopping nearby
Our price range will be between $200,000 and $280,000.

Consider Tega Cay, Lake Shore, Waterstone, Sutton Place, Whitley Mills, Knightsbridge...Baxter Village is nice too, but my guess is that the homes in your price range would likely be too small. Best of luck to you

Thanks south.charlotte&union for your input. I will let DH know to explore those neighborhoods. DH needs to be close to Charlotte, works in uptown but he would be taking the light-rail. My other areas of interest are Indian Trail or Concord. Any thoughts on those areas?

If he wants to take the light rail, he would have to stay somewhat close to the state line or the east side of 77. The traffic in some parts of fort mill on the way to the light rail station is horrendous during rush hour. If you stay near the state line (Carowinds theme park area), you can easily get to the first light rail station via I-485 (opposite rush hour traffic). The trip on the rail from this station to uptown is 9.6 miles and takes about 22-25 minutes.
