Cody has 9000 people. There are 25000 in the county. I don't know about crime being a problem. No one who lives here thinks so.

I do know that there is a lot of drunk driving and drug use around the Indian reservation. The do gooders in Washington gave the Indians the best land in this state; they do nothing with it. But they love those checks from Washington.

The South Pass area is a quiet place for quiet people.

Teapot Dome and the uranium mines were pretty much south of Buffalo I think -- quite a ways south. I like Buffalo because it's "just the right size" for a small community -- small enough you don't have to worry much about traffic, crime, etc., but big enough to have decent shopping and most services -- good schools, nice golf course, and an airport capable of handling commercial jets. Weekly World News - Google Books

It's also at the intersection of I-90 and I-25, so it has good access to the world beyond. Casper is an easy two-hour drive, and Billings and Rapid City are maybe another hour. But the best thing about Buffalo is that it's nestled up against the Bighorn Mountains -- easy access to a great summer and winter playground.

All that said, I'm not so sure the Lander area can be beat. It's more isolated, which is probably its saving grace. If not for that, I'm afraid it would be inundated with tourists. I was first lured to Wyoming 40 years ago with the promise of a job in Lander. Then, at the last minute, I was informed there was no job vacancy there. I waited six months. Still no vacancy. I could go to Gillette, Cody or Greybull. I picked Gillette. Some might think that was an odd choice, but I like it -- an hour from the Bighorns and an hour from the Black Hills. Still, I wish I could have gone to Lander.

As of right now, I think my husband is seriously thinking about bypassing Cody and sticking to Lander and then heading to Buffalo to see what's there. The realtor I'm going to be dealing with in Lander sent a listing of homes - gotta admit it's getting tempting to just look in that area. Will wait a few more days to see. Once again, have to thank everyone on here for there input.

Of course not - that would hurt tourism. You only need to visit city park to find a meth dealer. Cody had one of the highest number of drug cases presented before the courts. Why would they need to impanel a grand jury - never needed one in previous hundred years?

You know so little, but spout so much! DC did not give them the best land, only the poorest. Shoshone were there about the same time as the Crow and the Arapaho were dragged there from Oklahoma. The Crow got the better deal.

The land in question is drilled for oil. About 20 years ago, the tribes complaints in US District Court against Gulf Oil, ARCO, RD Shell, Continental Oil for bypassing the meters and cheating them out of their oil royalties. 12.5% may be a pittance to you, but it puts food on their tables, allows them to purchase new vehicles from Fremont Motors and keeps mobile home dealers in business replacing the dilapidated homes with new.

The South Pass area is a quiet place for cows.

Thanks everyone. We were in Lander for the snow storm 2 wks ago when looking at homes, found 2 that we love and decided we didn't need to look anywhere else. We put an offer in for one and are in the waiting process - have to be outta here by 7/30. Can't wait to be part of Wyoming. Once again THANKS !!!

Hi there. I saw that your post was 2010 so I was wondering; how's it going? Still in Lander? Make it through that 1st winter and stay for a 2nd one?
I've been reading these posts, learning about WY and considering WY as my retirement state. I would love to know how you've done over the last few years. Thanks in advance.

I've found the residents of Park County to be the friendliest I've met in Wyoming. I've never had negative interactions with anyone from Cody, Powell, or Meeteetse. All of them I've met have been salt of the earth types.
