I understand that Sheridan is a vibrant city with breathtaking scenary. I am wondering about the local economy (I have read this is strong). Are the employment opportunities good? What are the major industries? Average monthly rent payment?

I know there are many activities to keep one busy. I desire a more stable and relaxing pace of life. I grew up in Western Pennsylvania, so winters and snow would not be a problem. Warmer summer temeratures would not be an issue neither (I have lived in Southern California for 8 years, and have adapted to triple digit daytime temps). I can handle warmer days as long as the humidity is not opressively high like can be back east at times.

I am involved with the real estate industry in California. Not sure if this is what I would pursue in Wyoming. My motto is one needs to be where they feel more comfortable with their surroundings. Wyoming seems to be able to offer this for me.

If you were going to live anywhere in Wyoming, Sheridan would be the place. I've been there on several occasions. The southern part of town is developing quickly: new houses/subdivisions are being built. As a relator I think you'd do quite well in Sheridan. Be cautioned, however, that from what I understand, much of the boom is due to gas and oil development near town. Meaning the economy could be pretty cyclic: from boom to bust and vice versa. That's the major industry in Sheridan.

I can't say anything about you life being stable in Sheridan, from my experience Wyoming has been anything but stable, but it'll certainly be relaxing if you can integrate yourself with the culture. Wyoming is infamous/famous (whatever you prefer) for the culture's laid-back mentality. "It'll get done when it gets done." That said, most people probably won't expect you to work your butt off....they know things take time....smooth and easy. This can be kind of perturbing in a customer service arena (I'm speaking from experience)....

In summer it does get quite warm. When I was there 2 weeks ago it was 100+. No humidity though, if you can handle the dry heat. Recreationally, the Big Horn Mtns have a lot of things going on. They're beautiful. I will caution you to avoid contact with Goose Creek and its tributaries for recreation: lots of fecal bacterial problems (you didn't hear that from me).

Some advice: don't tell people you're from California. I've heard numerous times Wyoming people saying that don't want anything from California here or the east for that matter: mentioning Pennsylvania is out of the question. Sheridan may be more open to outsiders than the rest of Wyoming, but don't be surprised if your ostracized for being an outsider.

Good luck!

It's not so much that people from other states move here - it's that they move here and then they want to change our lifestyle to fit their idea of how things should be, i.e, that they should be like CA or PA. I remember seeing a bumper sticker once over in Sheridan that said, "Don't californicate my state." That about sums it up. If you can move here and accept the Wyoming lifestyle as being very different from what your accustomed to, then you'll feel welcomed, but if you come here and then think you need to have this and that amenity and that this law needs to be changed, etc, you will not feel welcomed at all.

Default Thanks for the info

I appreciate the feedback. I do not consider myself a Californian (more of an actual torist who kind of got stuck in California for a while). I can adapt to any environment (as long as it's safe and sane).

I , too, am considering moving to Sheridan. I have been fleeing the "city" for some time. Originally from Chicago, I now live in Omaha. When I first moved here, it was great, but its growing by leaps and bounds and now I'd like to go further west and find a much smaller town. I'm tired of city people and Omaha has been taken over by "imports" from really big cities..hard to find a native nebraskan here anymore sometimes....
Can anyone tell me what the employment situation is like? I'm an Exec/Admin Asst'...much hope of finding a job?

Howdy, here's the listings of almost every job available in Wyoming. Just need to put in desired wage, location and it will list what's available.

https://www.wyomingatwork.com/

That was for all jobs, but this one is for State jobs only.

If you are serious about Sheridan, PM me.

Default Considering making Sheridan my future home!

I'm considering moving to Sheridan in a yr or so and was hoping someone would be able to tell me a little about it. I'm currently attending college in PA to become a service technician in the HVAC/R field. Does anyone know if theres work there for me in that field?
Is the cost of living there in Sheridan high or would one say it's about average?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Go back one post before yours and take a look at those websites I posted. They list all the jobs available in the state of Wyoming. After you look at that, post your questions and we'll be happy to fill in the gaps.

There is a lot of work in your field here and it is safe to say even if the energy boom busted Air Cond. & Heat esp. is a major need in this state because of the weather. So in other words the trade is stable and enough work for year round. My hubby is a HVAC/R Technician.

Here is the company my hubby currently works for
Alpine Climate Control They may or may not have an opening, always do for installers I know. They have an application in .pdf format too if you want one. They are a Lenox Dealer.

There are a few others companies in town as well..
Prill Brothers, that has been around for a while. They just had to hire two guys from Missouri because they couldn't find any local Service Techs.

Total Comfort which is an Amana Dealer

and Powder River a Carrier Dealer, will be hiring 5 service techs this spring for their new shop in Sheridan. They currently have a shop in Buffalo and Gillette.

Feel free to pm me if you have anymore questions about this field in Sheridan or Buffalo, my hubby knows people in the field and has met other guys from different companies in town as well as his own.
