But that's the British English spelling, isn't it? Offence, defence, licence, etc.
yes, it is, JJ. I see that quite a bit and my initial reaction is "misspelled" but then I catch myself.
As for the above poster complaining about the newscaster's use of an errant apostrophe: if you watch closed-captioned TV, then the news is written. Those who do the captioning have extremely eggregious spelling and punctuation abilities. It's a wonder how those with no hearing can figure out what's being said sometimes.

I have CC on all the time, (I'm not deaf, sometimes I don't want to hear all the noise but still want to know what's going on), and there are some things I've seen in CC that I can't even mention here. I would get banned or the post would be deleted. I think, "Did that CC writer REALLY think THAT was the word said?!?!!?"
Back on topic: I'm sure this has been said a million times on here or in other posts but I really, truly can NOT take this anymore...
PLEASE! Please, general public, learn the difference between, "to" and "too", PLEASE!
I'd be lost without spell check, it's not just C-D. The amount of misspellings editors miss in books is astounding.
offence...
I was reading The Forest For The Trees, a book for writers written by an editor. The book stressed the importance of proofreading, but I found the "spelll" in its pages!
