The same former co-worker who pronounced "charisma" as "chair-ezz-ma" had a habit of mangling a lot of words and phrases. One of the more memorable gaffes--which I heard on multiple occasions--was when, instead of saying "cause celebre", he would say "cause celibate".
There's a huge billboard along our highway that is for a hotel in Onley, Virginia that says, "The Only Hotel". You'd think there'd be more than one in a town that size.
Went missing is discussed back upthread a bit. It's a British idiom that has caught on in the US.
These nGram viewers suggest that it caught on at about the same time in both countries ( about 1970) and its increase in popularity rose in both countries hand in hand to about the same level.
