I thought it was "missiled" for years, too!

I also thought determined was detter-mined.

My stepdaughter could read very early (3) and one of the words she mispronounced was "ashamed". To her, in her world of many books, it was ASH-a-med. We still say it, sometimes, just for laughs.

In grade school on the East Coast, we learned about the WILL-a-met River way out there in Oregon. I ended up marrying a guy from Oregon. He quickly taught me how to remember the correct pronunciation: Wil-LAM-ette, g*d-dammit!

Growing up in a small town we used to, well, actually they still do, pronounce Agatha Street, Ah-Gatha. First time our out of town 4th grade teacher heard that she flipped out.

And a neighboring town, North Versailles, is pronounced North VER-Sales.

Hors d'oeuvres. It came out "Hores dee vores," accompanied by a cacophony of horselaughs.

Have used "appetizers" every since.
