I really can't stand preposition dropping. It drives me nuts. My room mate will say things like "The trash needs taken out" and I just give her the weirdest look every time because it's just such a bizarre thing to hear.
Funny thing, I never once in my whole life heard people speak like this until I moved to the west coast.

I think this usage is not so much dropping the to be: the trash needs to be taken out as it is changing ing to en or ed: the trash needs taking out or the oil needs changing.
My grammar is not always perfect, but I will vent a bit on this issue. The word "disinterested" does not mean what so many people think it means. On a related note, there is no such thing as September 31st!
