I come from the Philippines, a land well-known for loud, explosive, firecracker-ridden New Years (hell we are always on the news every New Year because of that and the following articles are just more example) - New Year Traditions in the Philippines which gives a local and positive spin on our New Year & on the flip side depicting the unintended consequences of such Fatal bangs that launch Filipino New Year - The National Newspaper - of such reports.
I have had the experience of spending New Year in the US (in Houston) twice during the New Years of 2007 and 2009 (because my siblings all live in the USA) and I honestly found them DULL even though it felt good to be reunited with them for the Christmas holiday season! I SERIOUSLY FORGOT it was New Year almost a week after the old year passed away on both occassions!
So I just wanted to ask you which countries around the world also use firecrackers to celebrate New Year so perhaps if I had to go abroad during that time I know where to go so I can still hear the loud noises? Thanks.
I will be downtown in Taipei tonight watching the tallest building in the world light up with millions of dollars worth of fireworks as the clock hits midnight! It is an awesome sight!
However, the PRC and ROC tend to be loudest with street firecrackers around the Chinese New Year. The cacophany rings over every town all day and night for weeks around CNY.
From what I can tell via Google News they do it in Australia and New Zealand too.
Not in the streets though! It's actually illegal to buy fireworks in Australia. Instead, cities (not Perth this year ) hold large public fireworks displays, that are put on by licenced pryotechnicians and held out over a river.

The Netherlands! It's only legal on New Years to buy/set off firecrackers, so everyone goes crazy in the streets and squares. I've never heard anything so loud in my life. The vets here even give out sedatives for people's pets!
