A fast-growing metropolis will inevitably become significant on the global scale. This has happened in many countries with growing urban populations recently. However, there are still some relatively large metropolitan cities that still haven't "made it" onto the global scale (eg Phoenix). Some non-global cities even have bigger populationd than some global cities. For example, Tampa and Amsterdam have similar metropolitan populations but only one of them is thought of as "global". This begs me to the question.

What is the biggest city (by metropolitan or urban area) that isn't really a player on the global scale?

There are probably a lot of contenders here. Take a good number of mega cities located in the developing world. Lagos in Nigeria for example. Certainly, a very important city within Africa, but how much traction does it get within the wider world.

^ Perhaps a better response would be Kinshasa, capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

I think Lagos definitely has enough to be a global city these days.

The three K’s Karachi, Kinshasa & Kolkata. I would say Chongqing is also quite isolated for its size.

Most of the Spanish speaking world know of Fukuoka because of this Dominican song. It’s like the Spanish version of an English man in New York.

I was wondering the name and artist of that song. I dont speak spanish, but like listening to Spanish songs. Had no idea they were talking about Fukuoka in that song. I never made that out.
