Someone asked for examples of beautiful suburban areas.

It's a suburb, though, and a very nice one at that. Definitely goes against the idea that all suburbs are ugly and boring. It's cosmopolitan.

It's not far from the city center and part of London. What makes it a suburb?

It's in outer London. It's not inner-city. I guess you could called it an inner suburb. What we call suburbs in the UK differs to what you call suburbs in the US.

Unlike New York, Los Angeles and other cities, London's boundaries accurately reflect its true population, rather than just covering a small area of the metro area. If New York was in England, then places like Yonkers and Westchester County would probably be part of the City of New York.

I thought it'd be call outer-city, though we're nitpicking. And suburb would when once you're out of Greater London. I think suburb is used somewhat differently in British English than American English, btw.

Suburb means slightly different things in different places.

For instance, here in Vancouver, a suburb can not be within the city limits. Areas of Vancouver with single family housing and arguably what some think of as suburbs, are not referred to as suburbs here. Kitsilano for example is referred to as a neighbourhood of Vancouver, but not a suburb.

Burnaby, Coquitlam and any jurisdiction in the metro area, but having it's own city hall etc are what we call suburbs.

Well, you can take a place like Esher, which is just outside London, but is part of the urban area, but nobody there says 'I live in the London suburbs' because to them they just live in Esher, a town in its own right. The word suburb in North America seems to refer to anonymous towns that are outside the city boundaries, but in the UK that's not the case.

So yeah, different meaning. Here in Leeds, our city boundary is rather extensive, and even includes some surrounding towns and villages, so suburbs here are very much part of the city. In fact, suburb is usually used here to mean anything that isn't the city centre. So even a dense, inner-city area might be considered a suburb.

I do not like suburban areas that are so car dependent but I think they might be perfect for families.

A suburb is away from the hustle and bustle of the city - could still be in the city or outside it. That's what springs to my mind anyway.
