To me, the main street and downtown area of a town or city is its heart. When I travel to a new place and walk down main street for the first time, I am given an impression of the town. The main street and downtown area is usually where I spend alot of my time in whatever town I'm living in, since that's where many of the stores usually are. So the "main street" is a large part of what the town is to me.
So I was thinking.... What do main streets look like throughout the world? What is the most beautiful main street in the world? Can you share a picture of a main street that you have seen (and perhaps enjoyed)? Where is it located?
Here is a couple pictures of my town's main street in Norway, Michigan, US.

There are two "main streets" in Lagos, Portugal. One, Avenida dos Decobrimentos is the main local coastal road, which is the main street of almost every town on the coast. It has stores and restaurants on one side and on the other is an esplanade along a marina and river and the sea.
The second main street is in only a few hundred feet away, but it is the main street in the largely pedestrianized part of the old city. The vehicular traffic is currently extremely restricted in this area. The picture was taken a few years ago, now the street is totally level, made of rough white marble and has sidewalk cafes, etc. There are two black strips in the pavement which show the rare vehicle just where they can drive.
