From my own personal experience, living in both countries, I totally agree. I keep in touch with friends and family in Canada and the US, and visit regularly, and when I compare stories, Australia is definitely more violent - for the average person, in the average area, not talking about dodgy, known crime spots which are unsafe in any country. There's a general aggressive element to the culture, a feralness which can affect you anywhere, even in broad daylight. Much of it is due to alcohol abuse. Not just one or two drinks too many, but one or two litres too many.

Anyone can to live in a city or country with low crime rate, but this not mean that is a "safe place", because this place you think is a "safe place" can be under terrorist attack risk.
What's worst? High crime rate or Terrorist attack risk??
High crime rate is worse. The chances of you getting injured or dying in a terorist attack are far far lower than getting shot or having your house broken into.

Which is a lot of the problem in Oz, we have very few of these. Most of the crime we encounter hear is random.

Nowadays, when safety comes to mind, I think immediately of the havoc, chaos, helplessness that Mother Nature may wreak upon me wherever I may be.

Burglaries, muggings, murder rates pale in comparison.

Wherever I travel in the entire earthquake-prone Pacific rim, my fear of being in an earthquke/tsunami override all other fears. Particularly British Columbia, that part of Canada, which is overdue for a whopper. Eastern Canada I'd feel more safe in.

And the recent flooding in Australia hasn't escaped my attention either.

And then there's those little criminals called mosquito's, another concern altogether, being I live in mosquito-free Las Vegas. I'm more scared of mosquito's than human muggers.

The fact that Canada is closer to America, it makes it automatically unsafe (terrorism 'spill', for one).

Don't you remember when the Boston bombings happened and everyone in Canada caught shrapnel in their legs? Short memory, Nat. Very short, indeed.
