When I was a kid (I am now 63) there were several professions that I considered honorable. Some of these heroes were parents of friends or family members. Many of these professions were the ones our comic book and movie heroes worked in. As examples:
Newspaper Reporter- - - Clark Kent, Lois Lane
Cowboys - - - Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy etc but actually movie stars.
Attorney- - -Perry Mason
Doctor- - - those I knew as a kid
Nurse- - - the ones that worked for my Doctor
Schoolteachers- - - several that taught me were on my list.
Firemen.
Policemen
Soldiers
Bankers- - -Kept my Dad going on the farm for years.
Presidents- - - Washington, Lincoln and Kennedy topped my list.

Now five decades later some of the professions that I once considered honorable have fallen into disrepute.
Newspaper reporters- - - nadda one I respect.
TV reporters- - - didn't exist when I was a kid.
Attorney- - - nuff said.
Doctors & Nurses- - - I still admire.
Schoolteachers- - - some are outstanding but there are a lot that aren't.
Firemen- - - All are heroes.
Policemen- - - Most are great but we sure do hear about the bad ones.
Soldiers- - - More heros in that profession than ever.
Presidents-- - Since Kennedy Reagan is the only truly great one in my opinion.
Bankers- - - LOL.

What profession would you want your kid to shoot for?

From Robert Persig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", describing just such a conversation he had with his son:

SON: "Dad, what do you want me to be when I grow up?"
RP: "Honest".

A federal prosecutor of corporate and government crimes would be a nice profession.

What are your honest opinions of engineers / computer scientists? Do they get a lot of respect and status compared to other professions?

To me anyone who has a legitimate profession, and earns their income by doing what they're supposed to do, they are honorable people in honorable professions.

Cunucu Beach, I'm surprised airline pilots were not shown in the list you posted, but I'm not surprised only 12% of those think congressmen, or politicians in general, think they have an honorable profession. To me car sales-people should get a higher percentage than politicians, and I would certainly trust a car salesman a lot more than a politician!

There’s not much of a difference between a politician and a prostitute.
Spoiler
They take your money and they ********* in the end.

Prostitutes don’t have lobbyists however.

LOL.. Aksarben, I think if you were to ask those who have hired prostitutes, they'd probably rate their profession as more honorable than politicians'! At least if they paid a prostitute, they'd get their money's worth...
