Lean is an effective methodology used to cut waste from manufacturing (but not limited to manufacturing) processes. It remains to be seen if American manufacturers apply Toyota's methods, albeit correctly. Having seen first hand good, and not so good, applications of Lean in manufacturing environments, I'd have to say the successes are spotty, at best, and this is due to bad/clueless management types who often times don't listen to their shop floor employees, supervisors, and engineers. I've seen Lean applied "top-down", which is not the correct way, in fact this appears to be the rule rather than the exception.

Lean has been applied with success at several key large U.S.-based companies, and many smaller ones (contract manufacturers and the like).
