Some of you people work in professions with mainly contract work - so how do you get health insurance? Do you go through your employer or buy your own?
Isn't an IT career mostly contract work? My engineering career is half contract half permanent jobs...
How much does H.I. cost if you buy it on your own?
I don't worry about H.I. because I got SSDI and Medicare A & B. So as long as I don't work over 9 months they won't cut off my SSDI and Medicare. I now get $1018 / month SSDI so I don't have to work a menial Starbuck's job!
I buy my own and it just increased to $430/month for me and my son. I'm 35 with no health problems and my son is 7. It is an 80/20 plan, $1000K deductible. I end up paying about $500 extra year on copayments and my portion of the costs after misc doctors appts and checkups. Neither of us are sick much, he had one sick appt last year and one broken arm.
It is comprable to everyone else in my area but I haven't compared it to other states. I'm in SC.
I think I ended up paying about $175 out of pocket for the broken arm. Initial urgent care copay was $35. Orthopedic doctor (two visits) copay was $65 each visit plus I think I owed another $50 or so for my portion of the expenses.
I'll find out as he has broken his arm again, this time though he has to get a checkup two weeks in so I'll have at least three $65 copays.
As a contract worker I joined BC/BS of SC in 2004 to the tune of $528/mo for 1 adult and 2 children, 16 and 8. Over the years that premium increased to $782 in 2008. Now that I'm unemployed and do not qualify for unemployment (1099 doesn't) we are uninsured. As far as I know there is nothing out there for contract workers other than to get individual insurance and you can see how cost effective that is. We had $1,000 deductible with 80/20 and no copayments. Hardly ever did we receive any benefits from that policy.
