Call me crazy, but lately I've been thinking I wouldn't mind working at Goodwill. I'm a big fan of thrift shops and, having recently spent some time there (I unfortunately need to move up another size in clothing, mostly because I sit around doing nothing too much in retirement), it seems like a lively atmosphere, and it would definitely keep me busy. As an added bonus, I wouldn't have to dress up; I could just wear my Goodwill wardrobe!
In my area they pay less than Walmart and all of the other retail and fast food places. So sorry, can't give you any real life feedback from anyone who actually chose to work there.
Why don't you just ask the manager next time you're there?
I think it sounds like a great opportunity for you. You like the atmosphere there and have spent time there. It would enable you to meet and help people. Go apply!
In my area, Goodwill is not an employment opportunity for non supervisory long term employment. They hire individuals who need on-the-job training to get skills to eventually seek gainful employment elsewhere. Different Goodwill's have different programs based on community needs.
Someone on another forum was reporting all kinds of benefits to taking a job at Safeway (including 10% matching 401k; cheap and good medical and dental; and pension). She's getting something like $23+ per hour. I think she said she is 53 and they only let you work until 65.

I noticed some of the benefits at Goodwill include tuition assistance and cosmetic dentistry (!). But I do wonder if there's an age limit; I've never seen an older person working there.

I have only been there to drop off and there are a wide variety of people that I have seen over the years. But, I'd say shoot higher because I think these people it's their first employment opportunity.. I think it would be too rough and tumble and too rudimentary for you. I'm also not sure the benefits are what you would expect them to be (they'd be way more basic than what you are imagining).
I like the idea of some little job you would enjoy though Or a medium sized one (or whatever).
I think it's a happy place and wouldn't mind working there. No real need for benefits, since I'm retired, but I might put both of those to good use!
