I just started a new role within my company and it seems that everyone I am working with in this new capacity puts their video on. Since it's internal folks who I overall like, I don't mind it. And I do get dressed every day (I learned early on that I could not, for the sake of my own mental health, work in my pajamas), so it's a question of making sure my hair is OK haha. I also rarely have meetings before 9:30 - just our company culture and I am very thankful. An 8am video call would not sit well with me, but if it was "necessary", I would suck it up and do it.
I need to engage clients over Zoom, GoToMeeting, etc. On any call, I make it a point to get prepared and “appear professionally groomed and dressed.” Our company sells to corporate clients and we need to present a nice appearance. The rule we have for remote meetings is to dress as you would as if you were physically onsite with the client.

But there's also the issue of just because we have capability for a video call doesn't mean every interaction has to be a video call. In the before times, if I called someone on the phone to discuss something, I wouldn't see what they looked like, nor would that add any value, so we can still have that expectation now.
Of course, sometimes an audio only phone call to discuss a topic suffices. In that case, I’m wearing a t-shirt and shorts!

I actually set up a separate area in my home office for zoom/Skype/teams calls, with a better camera, better lighting and a 32” TV. It provides some “distance” from doing it my desk, which isn’t far away but can distract me when emails are flying in. It does make it feel more like a personal conversation.
There are some days where I don’t plan to be on video and if there’s a request I will join without video. I’ve even said “I’m not camera ready today”. Most people get it.
I think the real issue here is that 8 AM is a pretty normal start time and is not early in the morning.
Depends on your workplace. Scheduling an 8 AM meeting among my colleagues is a last resort. 9 AM is more normal, but still tends to be viewed as early.

Thank you! I mean 8am isn't 6am...but it's also not 10am which i'd kind of prefer. But when it comes to timezones that was really the only option. The other option for me would be to have it at 8pm or 9pm and then it would be 8am for the Phillappines. That didn't appeal to me either. Lol. Basically connecting with someone via zoom so far away for something that could have been handled in an email...well you know.
