I have a friend that is looking to return to work. They were considering going to work for a small well-respected company that employs about 25 people. My friend knows the two owners plus their key manager and a couple of other employees there. A while back one of the owners had told them that they could have a job when they were ready but my friend only recently decided it was time.

About a month ago, the company's key manager left very suddenly after more than 20 years. People thought it was odd so my friend reached out to the manager who was a friend. At first the manager was apprehensive to discuss it and would only say he could not agree with the way the owners handled an issue with an employee. He then said that they sided with an employee who had been caught in something very bad over another who refused to continue to work with that employee.

Thinking this was odd, my friend started Googling the names of the employees they knew there. They were shocked to find that an employee they knew well (and previously worked closely with) was not only arrested but had plead guilty to child pornography charges. When this happened, the owners did not fire this employee because he is still working there today while awaiting sentencing. Apparently the manager did not agree with this and walked out.

So now my friend is trying to decide what to do. Should they still approach the company about working there? Would you work for a company that continues to employ a known child pornographer? Would you work with this guy again? What will happen to this company when all this becomes known? Should my friend just start looking elsewhere for work?

My friend is in shock over this since he knew (or thought he knew) these people well. I am not sure what to advise him. They are not necessarily in a hurry to work but would like to start working in the fall. Thoughts? Jay.

Personally? I wouldn't go near that company.

It's a little fishy that the owner didn't fire him. There has to be more to the story.

I would absolutely not work there given that info.

Stay far away. There is no reason to keep a convicted child pornographer onboard. It implies that if the employee is bringing in money, it does not matter what they do outside of work or presumably inside of work.

I agree, keep out! I once interviewed for a job that the interviewer said was open because the previous employee had personal problems causing him to leave the company. I later found out he was convicted of child molestation.

I would not allow someone's arrest record to influence my career decisions. Once hired I would stay far, far away from the creep but I'm not going to let a single employee at a company to negate what could be a good opportunity for me.

Now, if I was sharing a cube or paired up with this guy on projects I might feel differently, but I would try and weed that out in the interview process, if possible. "Will I be working directly with anyone?" "Can you describe my work space?" Questions like that.

Thanks everyone. I am thinking the same thing. My friend worked closely with this person for a couple of years and he is a really nice guy and a great worker. That is why my friend is so shocked by this. Who knew what demons this guy had? Jay

If they like drama, then go for it. Otherwise, hard pass.
