I have been giving some thought to looking into PT employment in addition to my current FT job and was going to consider Psychiatric Tech (Adult Inpatient) as a possibility. Does anyone have personal experience in that position? What might a realistic set of duties be like; job descriptions are very general and vague. I have past background working as an Applied Behavior Specialist for adults and as a men's shelter supervisor. Thank you for any input!

My only experience is with the Psych Techs at a private local mental health hospital where a relative spent some time. These positions require a degree in [SIZE=2]social work, recreational therapy or appropriate therapeutic discipline and two years experience. I looked it up after wondering how some of them ever got the job. One problem is the low pay, at just $15/hour.
Most of their work was babysitting the adults who would at times have episodes of strange behavior, trying to calm them down, and sometimes having to isolate them in a room with only a mattress. Other apparent duties included taking notes on the patient behaviors, helping some of them with dressing and showering. They also spent a lot of time escorting visitors in and out.

What is the setting? Private hospital? State? City or suburban or rural? What's the wealth distribution of the area?
It is a stand-alone 66-bed facility which is part of a private hospital system in Charlotte, NC. It seems primarily a city/suburban situation with "middle-class" income.
