I've been a delivery boy of various sorts since getting out of college two years ago. I hate the job for many reasons, but the worst is how often I am mocked on the job. When I was delivering roses, for example, I remember a grotesque construction worker asking "Are the ROsEs FoR Me?!" and trying to humiliate me in front of his cronies.

Tonight I delivered some food to a pro athlete in an upscale apartment complex in Beverly Hills, and some members of his entourage were laughing in my face, yelling "PIZzZa MAan," like I am some clown or leper deserving to be mocked. My life is in the absolute gutter right now, and it's a shame that people not in my shoes feel like they can treat me like this.

The construction guy wasn't trying to humiliate you -- he thought he was being hilarious.

No matter what you do for a living, you will deal with *******s from time to time.

Coupled with their natural stupidity and ignorance, they were probably high and drunk ... At least you have a job, unlike those losers who mooch off another grown male and will be living in their grandmom's/mom's Section 8 dump when their gravy train dries up.

OP - I think you have a persecution complex. People are not making fun of you, they are trying to be humorous. Your lack of self-esteem makes you see slights where none is meant. If I were in your shoes, I'd find ways to improve my skills so I can get better jobs.

I don't know ... Along with the military, law enforcement and fire fighting, construction jobs seem to draw more than it's fair share of d-bags.

Maybe try to become a server or a waiter in an upscale restaurant in BH? Plan a way out if your job is causing self esteem issues. Or find a way to deal.
People can suck sometimes.

If you have to deal with the general public, you need to develop a thick skin.

Just realize that the problem is not you, it's them.

Get over it.

"Are those roses for me?"

"They are if your name is Twinkletoes. Is your name Twinkletoes?"

OP, they are trying to laugh with you, not at you. Get over your persecution complex already.

In my book, a man that cannot laugh at himself is useless to me.

Added by edit.

One time, I drove into an area that had loose dirt and my SUV sank right into it. I called up my foreman and told him to bring something to get me out. Everyone on the job site dropped everything they were doing and came. I intended to have may be a couple laborers and an operator with a backhoe or something to pull me out turned into 15-20 guys standing around laughing *with* me at my stupidity. I'm the construction manager, by the way. As they were laughing and joking around, I laughingly said hey go easy there I'm still the boss.

You need to understand that 99% of the people out there want to get along with you. Joking around and having the thick skin to laugh at yourself will do you a lot of good. Also shows people how confident at yourself you are.

Next time someone asks you if the roses are for them, say back something like it's for *insert something clever here*.

People get excited when the delivery person comes, especially if it's for take-away food. I very much doubt anyone is mocking you. I know a delivery person for Dominos pizza who makes more a week at that part time job than I do at my full time one. :S
