do you like to work for small or large companies (# of people and sales dollars) or you really dont have a preference. I personally like working for medium or large companies because they are a little more secure because you are more secure in a large company.

I have worked for startups (10 people), small corporations (200 people), and now a larger corp (thousands of people).

I will never work for a small company again.

I like the small company atmosphere at this stage. Because I'm low on the pole (read: the bottom), and I know exactly where I can expand to, and theres lots of opportunities.

Eventually I want to be far removed from the day to day work, and high up a ladder. Corporation will be best for that.

I would prefer small because you get to know everyone. At the same time when you work for a small company you might not have benefits like you would at a larger company.

Have worked at REALLY large (fortune 500, more than 100,000 employees), and really small (1500 employee start up).

I prefer large so far. Large have their acts together in respect to human resources policies, harmonization of benefits, etc..

However, from a career opportunity standpoint, I would agree - small is much better if you are trying to get ahead.

I have always worked for large companies save the car wash I worked at as a teenager so I do not really have any experience with small business. I expect that your pay and benefits would be lousy at a small business but on the other hand you could stand out more and shine if you are a good worker.

My favorites are the start-ups that have lots of money (i.e. the dot coms). You have the best of both worlds.... yes, we all know where the dot coms went, but that was also a very excessive time (I was a network administrator and my office rivaled some corporate CEO's).

What I like is a small environment where you know everyone, but the organization is also there so you can be efficient (i.e. automated systems for expense reports, budgeting, accounting instead of shuffling through spreadsheets). I do think start-ups offer you much more opportunity and its much more fun as you get to make many of the rules. The flip side - your relied upon for much more... so you tend to work much more.

But I found it extremely challenging, rewarding, and fun. We'd work 12-14 hour days... but never thought much of it (probably because the beer started to flow at around 2pm). We were helping to build the company, so there was a sense of ownership. Of course, we also had the resources in the form of angel investors.

I love it where I am now. We have just over 2,000 people at our 2 hospitals and 10 clinics and I love being a part of it. Hoping to join same or larger in Phoenix area soon.

Change is a lot harder with the big companies. So many policies and procedures and road blocks just to get simple things done. Your responsibilites are more defined though.
