See, again a big miscalculation on your part. You will almost certainly not qualify for unemployment because you've only been there for only a month. Most states require you to be there for certain time and earn certain wages for you to qualify. So now it will depend on your previous job. Did you quit or get fired? If you quit, you won't get benefits.

It's only temporary. I told them that. Having a lot of flexibility was never told to me. And I'm certainly not going to work for free.
I've never seen, applied to, nor held a position where I wasn't required to have at least minimal flexibility at some point in my time there. It's always been understood whether someone told me that or not. Heck, even working in a call center where the hours are cut and dry there were a few times where I got held over on a long call and had to stay until it was completed. I couldn't rightfully put the customer back in the queue for someone else to take just because it was time for me to go.
Even if your situation is only temporary, you were brand new there. You can't walk in the door with a list of demands and then expect them to allow it. If you had been there 2-3 years and had proven to be a valuable employee and these circumstances hit I'd be willing to bet management may have accommodated you so as not to lose you. But being new and having proven nothing to them, it is just as easy to let you go and hire someone else who doesn't immediately need a lot of schedule accommodation.
My wife has had to stay late at work to wait on me before, and I've had to call neighbors last minute to grab our kids while we both had to stay late to finish up something. It just happens. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. It's an inevitable truth.
I doubt very seriously that the company expected you to work for free..... if you're hourly you report the exact hours worked and it will be on your next check. You don't have to ask if you charge the time or not. You charge it. After the fact, if your manager tells you not to charge it next time that is when you raise the red flag.

Well again I'm not available this week. They are the ones that aren't flexible, it's one week I said I can't.
Then QUIT AND SHOW THEM because your personal needs are much greater than income from work! YOU CAN SHOW THEM!!!!!!!!!
Because YOU should have what you need and want and they can hire a replacement in a NY second so EVERYONE is happy, right??!?!?!?
