I wasn't getting ideas, I was getting snap judgments and accusations.
So I'm supposed to say 'oh wow, yeah I guess I should admit that I am in fact full of ****-- what a brilliant idea!'???
A normal person would say 'I don't understand, could you give me some more info?', or just ignore the whole thing.

This is exactly why I regret posting this. There are too many nasty pieces of work on this forum, ready to pounce on anyone who shows even the slightest hint of vulnerability.
Initially, the guy is a lot like John Candy in Planes Trains and Automobiles. The picture you have in your head probably doesn't match the reality at all. It's easy to say 'you're over-involved', but I'm willing to bet you've never lived abroad before.
