What Union is this?
Most Unions i know will only take a very small portion of your check if you are part time. Also you may want to think about going back to school. At your income level school would be free and Financial aid would even help you pay the rent and put some money in your pocket.
Stop by the nearest Community College and go to the financial aid office.

I don't know what else to say...

What business are you working in and what is the "Union".
Maybe another "Outrageous scenario" thread ?
The UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers Union).
Minor Good News: I got 2 extra hours of work today due to someone not showing up, and I get to cover someones shift tomorrow. So that's more money next week.

So what are your dues.. about 2 hours of pay a month?
I could be naive, but I just don't get it.
I work for a company that has been looking for computer engineers overseas to fill good paying jobs. I'm talking $100k a year. What types of career advice do people get, to find themselves in situations like yours? This has always puzzled me.
I understand you are in a crunch now and need a solution right away, but what are your long term plans to get out of this mess? do you see yourself doing this 2, 5, 10 years from now? You won't survive pinching pennies every week.
You need a long term plan.

Poor parenting. The fact that the sister is doing poorly and the father did not (could not?) prepare for his future tells all. The whole family is struggling? What are the odds?
Not everyone's parents know how to manage their future or have a plan.
If you are struggling to make ends meet, a long term plan seems impossible. You get stuck in the day to day struggle. It's exhausting.
He may not have the skill or aptitude to get out of this mess. Not everyone can make 100k.
Your sister needs to work a regular part time job ALSO while she gets this struggling business going. That's what people do, otherwise she will flake many times over. She needs some reserve. You have a guaranteed income, she needs at least a part time guaranteed income.
Also not sure how ill your father is, but if he has difficulty living alone, maybe contact IHSS (County In home support services) so one of you can get paid to care for him.Hope it all works out. Sounds like you obtained a pretty good job
You won't really see the benefits of being in the union until your full time and have some seniority under your belt. Union grocery stores pay hourly employees a lot better than non union ones. Better benefits and they usually have a real pension plan.

Well we get paid 10.10. 40 cents less then what McDonalds employees get paid, but it's pretty good money.
