Most likely you would have to apply for jobs that don't really require a certain degree. You would have to find positions that don't care to much about what particular degree you have and it is not a deal breaker if you don't have 2-3 years of past experience. Easier said than done I know, but lets face it for the most part a social science degree is probably not pulling in the same interest from employers as someone who graduated with Accounting degree, computer science degree etc...

Have you looked into the Student Conservation Association or Americorps..what about Peace Corps? The SCA offers internships that can last from 2 months to a year across the country..they are often designed to introduce youth 18-25(but there is no age requirement for a couple of the programs,I'm 30 and am an SCA member) to environmental issues and you get a living stipend, often a commuters reimbursement as well. After your service is done, you receive a small amount of money to either put toward school or pay loans. That may not be ideal, but its something you could do while looking for other jobs and sometimes people get hired after the internship by the agency they work for. You said your degree is in social science-what concentration? Peace Corps requires a 2 year commitment usually, and you also receive an award of money I believe when its over, but in those two years you can learn a lot about the community you're helping and bring that experience back with you..being a peace corps alum also makes you noncompetitive for federal hiring and people really respect one's commitment to something like that. Good Luck.

I have some possibilities for you....

You can sign up to work with mentally handicap or mentally ill in group home & it is sleep-in position in city.

Americore has social worker opportunities and they provide housing sometimes.

You can work live-in CNA stuff with old farts/disabled in another city. Craigslist has lots of ads. No legitimate ad will ask for social security number first, drivers license or birth day. Craigslist has a lot of scammers so be careful.

You can ask to shadow the social worker at school district or nursing home nearby you. If your town has an office to assist needy with charity request, you can offer to work with them. You need to offer it for free with these...Work whatever you need to for spending money. County mental clinic offers internships too. Look at grocery store bulletin board, your town facebook swap group or usual newspaper for options. Church people can give you info about work in your town.

You have tougher situation there...It's easy for liberal arts people to work online. Hope this helps. (You can look for online craigslist work doing Microsoft Excel & internet research if you want, online customer service, transcription or data entry...Again, watch for scammers. So many of the scammers cut & paste their ads so any similar formatting or insanely high pay really stand out as fakes. Few companies hiring use a private email through the free services like email or hotmail, these are usually fakes too BUT some do use their own home email when hiring right before they fire the old worker....
