I'm starting to do this more and more now, as long as I've finished the project ahead of schedule.
Many times, if I turn a project in near the end of the day, my manager will immediately get into a lengthy discussion with me and I end up staying at the office longer than usual. So if it's not urgent, I'll now send completed projects to my manager the first thing next day.
Another alternative is to send right before you leave if your boss works all around the clock. That way, the next morning, he has already given deep thought to my results and can deliver more meaningful feedback rather than pulling me into the office and asking me to explain every little detail when he could have figured it all out with some thought or a Google search.

There is not an always rule on this, it depends on the people you work with. Some people have no life and want to keep you there late when it isn't needed. This isn't a good supervisor, but you are dealing with it the best you can for the circumstances. I try not to engage people in what I refer to as "new activities" late in the day or when they should be wrapping things up to go home, unless it's urgent.
It's actually smart to do this if you review your work before sending it off the next morning. Oh, the things a clear mind will catch.
Yes, I do it.
