Also my thinking is, if you have two candidates presenting with approximately equal skills, and one of them started off in a worse position to get there, does that not imply something about their relative abilities?
Inged, 50% of the workers in this country make less than $500/week. It's a survival imperative to have as many people in the household working as possible. For these 50%, it's not going to designer clothing, I don't think.
You could have a basic lifestyle with the minimum wage salary.
You wouldn't have a car or a cell phone, but those aren't necessities.
I think he means that employers expect employees to be accessible by phone at all times, and not just when they are physically at home. For minimum wage positions in retail and the restaurant industry, scheduling needs can change rapidly and you may be called in early or on an off day to cover for someone else or respond to unexpected increases in customer volume. If you're frequently unable to respond, they will not hesitate to put your head on the chopping block for "not being a team player."
I also question the ability to pay rent and utilities on minimum wage in most areas of the U.S., especially the areas reachable by an average city's public transit system.
Many women expects to work jobs where they get 4 weeks paid vacations and men doing 70% of the work and they can to take it easy but still want the same pay raises that men demand.
Interesting stuff - there isn't a single state in the country where a person can afford a two-bedroom apartment working less than 63 hours a week. In many states, you'd need two minimum wage workers to earn enough for a basic 2 bedroom. And given that many places have ordinances requiring at least two bedrooms for a family with children, that means a 2-bedroom apartment is a necessity. It isn't the cell phone or car that is the issue. That said, how is a car not a necessity in most places? Maybe if you live in a major city it is not, but in most places in this country, a car is necessary for getting to and from work. In fact, many lower-wage jobs ask if you have a reliable vehicle right on the job application.
I do think that women have a strong advantage in getting hired for most good jobs today. By "good jobs" I mean jobs that pay a good wage and are respected professions.
Today's women are typically more motivated and responsible than are today's men.
The only jobs where men have an innate advantage are jobs that require physical strength and jobs that require extraordinary logical-mathematical ability. The vast majority of good jobs do not require either of those.
There is non-official Affirmative Action whereby companies want to increase the diversity of their workforce if they are able to.
Looks matter, especially for good jobs, and there are more good-looking women than there are good-looking men.
Following in the steps of the previous point, if the hiring decision is made by a guy in a lead role, and if the potential hires include a good-looking woman, then the hiring guy might want her onboard because he sees her as a potential s.o. who'll be easy to get since he's in a position of power. This happens often.
