I am attempting to get a W-2 from the year 2003. It seems that there is no way to get one. The IRS only keeps W-2's on file for 10 years, and that's it! After that you are SOL!
You can get a W-2 Transcript from the Social Security Administration for $37, but it only shows income, but no state taxes taken out.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get that W-2?
I have called and spoke to the company I worked for in 2003, and they sold the division I worked in, and there are no records for 2003 that they can give me.
The IRS has no W-2's for 2003, a 2003 transcript does not show state taxes taken out.
Same with the SS Admin.
I'm pretty much stuck and need help.
I have been told by the State to go find, not a needle in a haystack, but a needle that doesn't exist in a pile of needles.
Who did your taxes? Did you do them yourself or have a professional do them? If the latter, he or she may have the information. If you did them, pull out the copy of what was filed to see if you can get the total from that.
Did someone within the company process your payroll or did you use an outside vendor like ADP? If ADP, you might see if they can get you what you need either with a copy of the W-2 or with a copy of the stub for your last paycheck that year.
With it being 11 years ago the only people that may have it is the state, most companies will not keep records that long, most tax preparers and accountants will shred documents after 7 years, and of course the IRS only keeps things 10 years usually.
George56, since you're desperate, it's still worth a try to call your tax guy. Just because they can shred after 7 years, doesn't mean they always get to it. I know my guy doesn't. He's in a small, five man operation.
I can't believe the naysayers who are arguing about what will amount to a five minute phone call, at best.

HELP!!
Well, doesn't the state have a copy in their records as well?
What's going to happen if you or they can't find it?
Was your pay deposited in your bank account? Perhaps you can find out what your net pay was that year. If you can find a couple pay stubs you can estimate your gross.
Reconstructing pay from your net is at best an estimate because your deductions, such as health insurance, may not have been the same all year.
Social Security won't have a transcript of your W-2 because they don't receive that but they can give you at least your gross taxable income.
