Recently began a job at a startup and my coworkers in my department do crazy hours. I get in at 9 and half of them are already there. I leave at 7 and almost of of them are still working. They also eat lunch at their desks. So basically 10 hours nonstop with just bathroom breaks. Is this normal now? I've interned at a 20 year old company before and 9-5 was the norm and I felt like the work life balance was on point.
Do they have equity on the line? It changes your entire outlook toward work. They are looking for the cash-out and are willing to work as much as it takes to get there.
I rarely left the office when I worked in an office, too many people to deal with at lunch time downtown and I could sit at my desk and have my popcorn or sandwich or both without much interruption.

We all have stock options but the startup is so early in its life that itll probably be 5+ years before IPO or acquisition.

I came from a workplace where the whole team went to get lunch together; people that brought lunch would still go just to hangout. I think its important for a team to get lunch together as it makes working together much easier. I was planning on going to the gym occasionally during lunchtime but I can't even be gone for 20 min without feeling like I'm slacking off.
I've worked six jobs in four years. The only place I have seen those long hours is at my current employer, where many personnel routinely work 50+ hour works, others more, and most eat lunch at their desks. Not every company works long hours nor is that the expectation.
That is (tech) startup normal. I imagine there is ping pong and other stuff to get you to stick around too. I don't like tgose startups. You have better odds at work life balance if the founders have kids and are involved parents. If you have you g-ish singles, then tge culture is usually work hard play hard. I am sure half of the team hits the bar after work and hangs out on the weekend.
I don't think it's abnormal. Most of my group don't go to lunch either. We may go to lunch together once every other week on our working Friday but we usually have a lot going on so we tend to stay at our desk. Plus it is easier than dealing with lunch hour traffic.
Thats never normal IMO. And why anyone would work themselves like slaves who never get up leave, walk around, work 10 hours plus at their work station is beyond me.
Especially today when companies don't give two craps about their employees these days (Despite claiming they do).
You are foolish if you are doing that. Never work too hard or be overly dedicated because the truth is, no one cares anyways.
