What in heaven's name gives them the right to ask for such personal information? Did you ask? If you were applying for something with secret government or military clearance that's one thing. But if they're worried about your credit rating, let them pay to run a check on you. If they didn't before they hired you, that's their problem. I would refuse on principle alone if they can't supply a need-to-know. What will they want to know next? Who you sleep with?

That would be absolutely horrible. Considering how everyone's private info seems to be up for sale these days, you're probably correct. Just awful.

I think sometimes waiting for a more decent company to work for would be worth it to suffer unemployment a little while longer. PB asked the OP after hire for the w2s, not before, so he may have had other offers he already turned down. PB's employment methods seems specious and disingenuous. I wouldn't want to work for a place like that and would rather wait then give into their demands.

OK, it must be nice to be independently wealthy when.

I'm definitely not, but if I had to and no other choice I'd do it -- but I'd be out of there as soon as I found something better...which would be the case for most people going to work for an employer like this (and also an argument found on the opinion posts when asked about this)

this is also supported by the fact that when this did happen to me (and about 40 others) I was able to walk while others didn't have 2 choices like I did. Those that stayed with the new company that took over, almost all walked as soon as they found something better. They only did it to get by, they used them the same way they were being used in this situation.

though I don't know how many of them actually did end up giving their pay stubs. its the tactics that they were using at all that gave people a bad taste.

and ps. like I said before, I still got the offer and was able to negotiate something without ever showing them a paystub or telling them my income. this company had a drastically different benefits package than my employer, it would have been comparing apples to oranges so i refused.

Would you prefer to speak to my union rep/attorney?" Of course this comes off as a bit confrontational but isn't their request confrontational in and of itself?
If your desperate for a job I guess you kinda gotta go along with what they say. My dads company for example makes you hand over your facebook login and password, I think that's crazy.

Personally I probably wouldn't want to work for a company like that, to me that shows they don't respect their employees, think they have alot of say into employees private lives.

A job interview / hiring process is a business negotiation. Basically the employer wants you to put all your cards on the table and show them your hand while they hide theirs, it's just not fair. It's basically the employers job to hire you at the lowest cost with the most output from you. It's your job to get the most money for the least amount of work. I know prettty much every application asks but its really none of a future employers business what a past employer paid you. Thats about as much tehir business as it is your business what other people in your role have been paid. I think if you don't desperately need the job and kind of politely stand up to the employer and say I don't think that's relevant, is that something you require? That's not something I'm going to hand over.
