I truly thought that the employment check/investigation would result in my job offer's being rescinded after the employer who fired me last year was contacted and revealed the true reason for my departure from the company - incompetence. but surprisingly, the employment check came out positive and I was offered the job. did I just get extremely lucky?
Are you saying you know for a fact that your last employer said that? Most employers will not give out such information. They will only confirm you worked there and salary.
But honestly do you think any person who ever got fired never got another job?

I have no idea what the last employer said. given that I was fired due to incompetence, I wasn't expecting them to praise me. and while former employers will reveal only so much information about former employees (due to legal reasons), sometimes tone of voice says a lot. And if they are asked if the former employee is eligible for re-hire, they can always say no, and still be free of legal liability.

I had the feeling that was the case for most people who got fired.
I was fired from a job once, too, and feared it would be a problem. I did a lot of reading online and found that you can sue a past employer if they say something that would hurt your possibilities of getting a new job. They can only confirm if you worked there or not but they won't elaborate on the reasons you left unless they want to get into trouble.

How did you explain getting fired when you were interviewing?

Companies can say whatever they want as long as they tell the truth. Now most will not due to fear of being sued, but being sued and being right don't have a lot to do with each other.

This is pretty much it... trash talking you can get them sued. I have had some pretty bad job splits in the past for various reasons and none ever resulted in me not getting another job.
employers are very quick to fire people these days. i imagine it comes up alot.
glad it did not harm u.
