To become a high school English teacher, do you have to have a degree specifically in English? I'm a prospective student at USC and want to major in Narrative Studies, an interdisciplinary major in the English department, but I'm worried that I wouldn't be able to get a job as an English teacher unless I have a degree in English. Does anyone know? I can't seem to find the answer online. Thanks.
Perhaps going to the English department at your school, and asking some basic questions about what credentials are needed to teach high school English would be a good start.
But I took a state (Georgia, suggested to me by your username) and I asked Google, "What do I need to teach English in Georgia?" And this lovely website popped up:
You need a degree in education that leads to licensure with endorsement in English. Check in the education department. An English degree is not enough. Also, that teaching field is not in demand, so you may not be able to find a job even if you do have an education degree.
