With another thread, we've all learned the advantages of using LinkedIn.
I see how this can be beneficial for people in the computer industry and sales. Maybe even some smaller industries, however, if it's too small, a job specific board may be a better way to go. Or, what if your job is more dime a dozen, say, a receptionist. Would LinkedIn really help? Personally, I don't think it would. But hey, maybe it has. I'd love to find out if there are industries that utilize LI more than others and that's why people think it's such a great tool.
So tell me, what industry are you in and has being on LinkedIn helped your career?
In sales, and I see very few admin exec types on linkedin. LI is designed, IMO, for white collar/sales types. Once in awhile I see a funny one, like my aunt, she is a retired teacher on LI, ok
I have a profile and I am a Dental Hygienist. I really don't use it that much to be honest. I can see the benefit for networking and possibly Marketing for Sales professionals and such, but in the Dental/Medical world it just doesn't seem to be utilized much.
I am in health care and in my particular field, I do not know of anyone who really uses it. There are plenty of health care recruiters on there but it seems that I get more bites on Indeed than anywhere else.
I do have a LinkedIn account but I rarely use it for the reasons listed above.

I agree. I know some people who are on it and I think they got on because it was "the thing to do at the time". This was pre-FB if you think about it. Maybe that's why your aunt is on there...and those "funny ones".
My industry is Computer / IT and LI is used very extensively in my field. LI can be beneficial for most any white-collar types of job, but it takes time to network on it for any results to show.
At this time, I know fields such as transportation or general education under-utilize Linkedin.
I do accounting and am a mortgage loan officer on the side, I use Linkedin and use it to keep up with and email back and forth with contacts that I have at least met face to face and former coworkers; I seem to get more head hunters contacting me then anything on Linkedin. I do know a stock broker and several people that do business to business sales that swear by Linkedin, I also know a few people that have either been recruited or found a job through linkedin.
