Architects. The ability to apply abstract concepts often with new materials and allow for people use has to be the most incredibly difficult set of skills to execute.

And volunteers.

Police officers, military, doctors (except psychiatrists), surgeons, medical research scientists, firefighters, paramedics

As a side note, the professions I respect the least are: politicians, lawyers, bankers, rappers, drug dealers, psychiatrists

I respect teachers. They don't get enough in terms of admiration or compensation in comparison to the importance of their role in our society. I also have great respect for social workers, particularly those who try to protect children. Given what the burn-out rate is in a job like that, it amazes me that anyone can do it. I realize there is plenty of failure in that field. But given what child protective workers see on a day-to-day basis, it's a wonder they can even function. I used to be a newspaper reporter and I heard many stories of child abuse and neglect that left me quaking in my boots. To have to stare that in the eye every day and still have people heap criticism on you for not doing more must be one of the most difficult of all jobs in terms of its toll on one's emotions. Easily akin to police officers and soldiers.

I like this answer and most of the others here, however, if I pick a few professions to respect so to speak because the jobs seem very difficult to me:
police
teachers
nurses
doctors (who work with the terminally ill)
elderly/disabled care providers

So you're breaking the medical profession down based on particular scope of practice. Does that mean you also have varying levels of respect for others within the profession? Where does a podiatrist fit in on that breakdown?

I personally don't dislike bankers. They serve a vital function within our society. The ones I despise are bank-sters, or economic terrorists.
