How do you feel about working at a company with a high turnover rate? I'm not talking retail here, where it's expected, but in a corporate environment. We've had 3-4 people let go just in the last two months in our department. Some had been with the company for quite awhile and others for a short period. Every year they seem to do the same thing. In fall, they hire a few new people. In the beginning of the year, they fire 3-4 people. Every. Single. Year.
Would working in this type of environment make you feel uneasy?
Absolutely. If it were me, I would do the best I could while I was there, but I'd also be looking elsewhere for a more stable company and I wouldn't hesitate to jump to a new job.
I'd take it as a second job but things would start to get hairy for them the moment I started feeling threatened or pressured. I love the managers at some of these places (jobs that I just considered extra spending money alongside my real work) who act like I'm desperate to hold onto a position and think they can say whatever they want to me...
...always amusing when my PTSD kicks in at that moment and two minutes later the supervisor leaves the scene looking like a wet poodle.
Many large companies follow this "performance management" model where the bottom x% of the low-performing employees are let go after each and every rating period. If you are a consistently high performer then it is less of a concern.
I would be extremely cautious about taking a job in a place like that. There are no guarantees anywhere, but it would make me uneasy to work somewhere where I thought any small thing could put me on the chopping block.

I've worked at places that followed the GE method of culling the bottom performing 10%. In cases like that, it can tip either way and be either a great place to work or really crappy because everyone is paranoid and concerned only with their own numbers.

Yes, this literally creates an environment of paranoid people. At least at this company. Everyone looks out for themselves.
It might be an effective method, but it sure is a crappy method. I've never worked for a company that operates this way and they all did perfectly fine in terms of profitability.
I'm working at a company with a rediculously high turnover rate (I actually put in my two weeks recently). The job focuses on productvitity as images per hour, a downtime % of how much you are actually working or not at your computer typing, and tracks error rates with a maximum of .5%, monthly. Yes, half of a percent.
Since I've been here we have had 6 people leave and fired 1 (but that was for something actually reasonable). And we are thinking of letting 2 more go if their productivity and error rates aren't up to standard soon.
It is demoralizing and frustrating at times, especially because there is only so much you can do about it.
Personally, I'm done with jobs that have productivity standards. They don't work. People get frustrated and eventually only do the bare minimum instead of working at 2x the standard they are capable of in fear of having a slightly higher error rate.
We have one person who does 2x what she is expected. Her downtime is slightly above what is standard, but she does 2x as much. I think it is fair to allow her this extra time away, but upper management sees otherwise.
This is a bad sign. Turnover is one of the things I ask when applying for a position. Bad places to work have high turnover, good places have low turnover.
