I understand the need for fast food workers, but why would anyone choose to work in fast food?

There are plenty of unskilled jobs that you can make more money doing...sometimes a lot more.

Read a news story about a guy who has worked for Mickie D's for 20 years...still making minimum wage, which in his state is 8.25/hr.

Why not become a barback, busser?

There would have to be thousands of jobs added for that to work.

Well, for one thing, the McRibs is back. I'd stick around just for that alone.

When I've asked people in low paying jobs why they stay, they always say the same thing. They like the people the work with. Sometimes they mention their regular customers as people they also like, that keeps them there. What they don't seem to get is that they'd like the people at a better paying job too.

It doesn't make any sense to me, but I've heard this lots of times.

I've worked many low-paying jobs. Fast food really isn't that bad. I couldn't imaging doing it for 20 years or whatever though. I never had a fast food job long enough to find out why people stayed, but the people I have met who had done that kind of work for a while were usually really stupid (like borderline retarded stupid) or did not know English. Maybe they were stupid, too. I don't know. Of course where I live, you don't have to learn English. I did a couple temp jobs in hotels. I couldn't believe how little these people made after years of working there. I mean hard jobs. Like the laundry. If I worked at a hotel for that long, I would be a mgr of something or at least get a cushier front desk job or something.

I haven't ever tried the McRib it scares me although I have heard it's pretty tasty.
I'm sure for some people it is the only option they have available. A good friend of mine had a sister who was a manager at McDonalds a long time ago and if I remember correctly she brought in ok money.

while your question sounds simple, there's probably more to it than that. for some people, that was all that was hiring, it's also very easy to do. Now, as for the man that stayed for 20 yrs - thats crazy, but if he wanted to stay, thats between him and the golden arches. some people are either really lazy, or really complacent, good for them.

People need jobs and fast food is always hiring. Some people simply can't do anything else. They find a zero skill job that they can do that doesn't require any education; they get comfortable at it and get a regular paycheck, so why leave?

I was going to say something like this, albeit more diplomatically. I'd also add in the fact that I have met many surly employees at fast food joints. The expectations for a register monkey are so slow, they seem to be able to get away with it.

This from a very attractive young woman who's spent a lot of money having her natural appurtenances surgically improved and enhanced and works as a waitperson in NYC. And who obviously has no idea how "the other half" lives. Hilariously and sadly ludicrous.
