Speaking just for myself, I had to pass a stringent criminal background check and credit check to get my job. This is because I am privvy to the private legal data for companies that are household names. I'm also in the midst of getting a government security clearance for another of our clients. If you think a credit check is intrusive, try being fingerprinted and interviewed by a federal employee carrying a badge.

Right. I was a bank manager in my former life. The employer required local, state, and federal criminal background checks, a credit check, fingerprinting and interviews with federal agents.

My daughter's military security clearance level required not only that HER background be checked, but those of immediate family members as well. We had to provide addresses, phone numbers, employer information and social security numbers.

Apparently we passed - she got her clearance.

In today's economy, especially, the obvious catch-22 is if you have been unemployed a while, chances are you credit is ruined by not being able to pay bills. If you work in industries like financial services or banking, I am sure bad credit could derail your career.

And that's when crime stats to make sense since people have to eat. Ridiculous
