I wasn't sure if this was the place to post this, but does anyone here have experience with the Peace Corps? I've been seriously contemplating it lately and have been reading all I can about the many pros and cons of volunteering. I just think it would be such an awarding and amazing experience and would truly give me an outlook on life I would never have otherwise. Two years is a long time, but I feel like I'm at a point in my life where it would be really easy for me to pick up and leave for two years.

Have you or someone you know volunteered in the Peace Corps?

I know quite a few people who have done it, immediate relatives and friends. What do you want to know about it.?

Well I know everyone has different experiences since they're placed in different locations with different people, but it'd be nice to know what people's individual experiences with the program were. Like what they liked about it, what they hated, how they felt during the first few weeks or months.

Well I know one person who quit before the orientation period was over. But for the most part everyone has fond memories of their experience.

When you sign up, you get to list your preference of geographic region and type of work. When you are placed, you will be given a choice of three or four positions to choose from, and you can in fact reject all of these and request a new list of choices, if none of them meet your liking. And you can always withdraw your application if you feel it is not likely that you will get an assignment that you want.

When you join PC it goes without saying that you have to kind of loosen up and roll with the punches. The first few weeks and months are indeed trying. You'll have language immersion training and be living with a host family. Your exact position and place of living won't be determined until you arrive in the host country so it's kind of a period of limbo and you have to be okay with that or it's going to set a bad tone for your time there.
