got laid off today. First time ive ever been laid off. Was told I was underperforming. This is the worst day of my life

That sounds like a bad excuse on their part if you've never had a discussion about it before.
But if you're in a "right to work" state like I'm in, they can say just about anything. Don't take it personally and move on.
